Top 5 Leading Iron Ore Producing Countries

Iron (Fe) is one of the most rich rock-forming elements and it is the world’s most commonly used metal. The ores are rich in iron oxides and vary in color from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red. Ores consist very high quantities of hematite or magnetite (greater than ~60% iron) are known as “natural ore” or “direct shipping. Iron ore is the raw material and it is used to make pig iron, that is one of the main raw materials to make steel. China is the largest consumer of iron ore, and to be the world’s largest steel producing country. China is the world’s largest producer of iron ore as well as largest consumer and importer of Iron ore. They produced 1.3 billion tonne (bt) of iron ore in 2012, that is about 44% of the world’s output. China’s crude ore in 2013 stood at 23bt and that contains 7.3bt of iron. domestic iron ore production mainly comes from Hebei and Liaoning provinces.  Beijing, Shanxi regions and Inner Mongolia are the other iron ore producing regions. Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel Group)  is the biggest iron ore producer in China.


Iron ore production in Australia is mainly concentrated in the Pilbara region of Western Australia which represents  over 95% of Australia’s iron ore  and it is the three of the eleven biggest iron ore mining operations in the world.  It has world’s largest economic demonstrated resources of iron ore with 22% of the world’s iron. In 2012, Australia produced 519 million tonnes (mt) of iron ore that represents 18% of global iron ore output. Mines are also located in the Mid West,Kimberley regions and Wheatbelt. Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) and Atlas Iron are the largest iron ore producers in the country.


Brazil is one of the leading iron ore producing country they produced 400mt of iron ore in 2012 and it is about 13% of the world’s total. Iron ore reserves calculated at 31bt containing 16bt of iron and it is the world’s second biggest. out 13% of the world’s total, while its iron ore reserves estimated at 31bt containing 16bt of iron, are the world’s second biggest. Para and Minas Gerais is the main iron ore deposits states in brazil.  Brazil is the world biggest Carajas iron ore mine and that is fully owned and operated by Vale, the world’s biggest iron ore producing company. Brazil is now leading in iron ore exports as well.


India is leading iron ore producing country and they are in fourth position now. Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa has 95% of the country’s total iron ore reserves and Orissa is India’s biggest iron ore producing state. In 2012 India produced 144mt of iron ore it is almost five percent of global iron ore production and India’s iron ore reserves are calculated at 8.1bt containing 5.2bt iron. National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is the largest  iron ore producing company in India.


Russia is number fifth in our category and they produced 104mt of iron ore in 2012 that is about 4 percent of the world’s output. Russia’s iron ore reserves calculated at 25bt containing 14bt iron. More than half of the country’s run-of mine iron comes from Central Russia and remaining production comes from the Urals and Siberia. Russia’s biggest iron ore producing company is Metalloinvest.
