Legend

The history of the temple is related to Dwaparyuga. Lord Krishna recommended one of his disciple to set up an idol of Lord Vishnu which was installed in Dwaraka. Guru Brahaspathi and Krishna took a promise with Udhava that devotees must feel the presence in the idol of Lord Vishnu. Guru Brahaspathi and Vayudeva carried the submerged idol from Dwaraka and started journey with it all over India with the help of Parasuram and reached to a lake surrounded with lotus flowers located in Kerala. It is considered that the lake was first dwelt by Lord Shiva and Parvathi then they shifted to Mammiyoor as Lord Vishnu was presided over the lake.

Guru and Vayu together founded the temple so the temple came to be known as Guruvayur Temple . It is also termed as Dwaraka of the south. Guruvayur Temple temple is facing to east with two gopurams one presiding to east and other to the west. The idol of Lord Vishnu is being worshipped more over 5000 years. Guruvayur Temple temple is considered as the first ever temple to serve marriages and grain providing events (first food for infants). Sun God directly lays on the feet of Vishnu. The main entrance is on the left side is located on the eastern side of the gopuram(gateway). On the front side of the gopuram one can easily view the idol of Lord Vishnu. Dipasthabam or lamp of pillars are beautifully adorned with lamps which looks charming when enlightened in evening.
